BMW hosted a party the night before the Frankfurt Auto show started and shuttled guests to the event in their amazing 7-series hydrogen-powered cars. What's so amazing? They ride, accelerate, steer and feel like ordinary 7-series, which is to say they are world class. Still, the limitations of hydrogen are well known. Beyond infrastructure (Know where to fill up on hydrogen? Right.), hydrogen itself takes up more space than gasoline.
So when BMW produced a Mini that runs on hydrogen (BMW owns the Mini brand), it was quite interesting; especially since this Mini still has a back seat and the same size trunk as the regular Mini. Engineers hid the fuel tank under the rear seats, and a special new cryogenic freezing system (hydrogen can fit into a much smaller space if it's liquefied but it is only in a liquid state at -423 degrees Fahrenheit!) allows that tank to be much smaller.
We doubt you'll see a hydrogen-powered Mini in your neighborhood within the next five years, but Shell and BP oil companies are very interested in hydrogen technology for cars, and with oil companies behind hydrogen power, you might see real production vehicles within a decade.
